donation bug

Ello' ello' ellllllo'!

I definitely gushed over some Labyrinth delightfulness the other night with the man. He had never seen the whole movie. He got disturbed by the "Dance Magic Dance" song and shut it off many many years ago. But I convinced him to watch it all, because it's AMAZING. Ffffff

Anyhow, I'm writing a journal because I'm super excited about some stuff I'm about to embark on concerning donating handmade goods to hospitals. I decided the other night to wander about the internet, checking out charities looking for handmade goods. I had done this over a year ago and never committed to anything. But this year will be different. Also, when I searched this year, sites have improved and the community seems to have grown and expanded, which is great to see.

Teeny Tears is an organization that runs off of handmade donated flannel bereavement diapers. A set of 2 diapers are given to the family, one for the baby and one for the parents to keep if they wish to. The diapers are super tiny, made for preemies and micropreemies that are in the NICU or were stillborn or have passed away. These babies are too tiny to fit any commercial diapers. Also, these diapers are meant to help comfort the parents during this terrible time in their lives.

I have decided to start making diapers. I simply have to because I was so touched by everyone's stories about losing their babies. I can't even imagine how hard it must be to go into premature labor and then lose your baby, or even worse, in my mind, giving birth to a still baby that died in my womb. That is so terribly heartbreaking. I also found out that two hospitals near me are accepting locations, so this makes it even better since it's right in my community. Of course, I don't meant that any other hospital doesn't deserve the diapers I make. But being able to just go drop off the diapers does mean that I can spend more money on supplies and making more diapers than spending some of that money on shipping.

I also found out that flannel is half off at Joann's. Fuck yes. Means I'm buying lots.

I will be donating burial sets to Mikayla's Grace. Each burial set consists of 2 sets of each item, of a gown, booties, and hat. It's the same idea as the diapers, that the baby will be buried in one set and the parents can keep a matching set for their memories.

I'm also going to be donating headbands and bows to Bow Dazzling. They are a organization that donates handmade hair accessories to girls going through chemo and other illnesses at the hospital and are just trying to make them feel pretty and girly again.

I'm very personally inspired to give back to these families in need after my own intense hospitalization almost 5 years ago. Granted it was for severe injuries from a nasty car accident, but if someone had given me something handmade to try to comfort me, I would have been so touched. I probably would have sobbed my brains out. I did have things given to me but in a different way, and after I was more coherent and thinking about things, I was touched by what people did for me. Some people had stopped to help us after the accident. They tried to wash the dirt and blood off my face. They wrapped my hand with a little care bandage that they tried so hard to do. They put their jackets on my bloody mess of a self. They tried very hard to do what they could.

I want to donate some hats to the children at a local children's hospital as well. I've made my own pattern for Pokeball hats and when I think about if I was a kid and I was given a Pokeball hat, I would be puuuumped.

Sooooo I've decided to set some goals for myself.
I will make at least four burial sets this year. I'd like to try to make one a month eventually.
I will make at least 2 yards worth of diaper sets a month.
I will make at least 6 headbands a month.
I still need to figure out a proper blanket goal.

After I get these ones underway and in rhythm, I will add in some hats for kids.

So yes. I've been bitten by the charity bug and will make this year be filled with giving to others. I can make this happen. I would love to be able to keep increasing the amount that I am donating and I plan to be keeping a tally of what I donate so that I can at least keep it consistent, but really I'd like to be able to kick my own numbers' asses next year. I'll update on here at the end of each month with my tally and where the things are going to.

Here's to a year of giving to those in sad places. <3

new year, new commitments.

Hello everyone and anyone.~

It's a new year and I've left this blog to fester and rot like a unloved corpse. Shame on me. I haven't posted shit since July. Fffffff. So much failure. But while I was wasting time on Facebook, a friend of mine was pondering whether to start a blog or not to and it reminded me of this unloved creature so I ventured on over and felt inspired to get this thing going again, and for real this time too.

I've decided to commit to keeping this thing updated. I've also started a Facebook account as an artist under my extended artist name painted maru. Oh, how that name has traveled with me for so long. Who knew that a lame myspace name would attach to me like a leech for almost 8 years now. And I still love it, if not love it more.

Since it is late and I promised myself to be crafty productive tonight and make some bracelets, I'm going to wrap this up.

I will be posting on here much more frequently with the crap I'm working on as well as more inspiration posts and such. I've been doing a few DIYs that are from the internet, so I should actually post my outcomes of those said DIYs and help continue to spread the DIY love. Maaaaaybe I'll actually make some tutorials myself. But don't hold your breath because I hate the digital composition side of doing that crap. But anyways, I'll do another post very soon, a legit post.

Welllll, I really hope to get this creature growing and maybe even actually get some followers. I have this pipe dream that I could have a blog that people frequent and get excited about. But to even get anywhere towards that crazy idea, I need to actually post on here.

Here's to a new year of expanding and growing!~

summer project list explosion + tutorial links~

Oh my. I have been mia on here for ages. The masquerade ball was dramatic. Anime Expo destroyed the last bit of energy and patience and just brain power I had left. I swear that I'm still trying to solidify my mashed potato brain. Fffffff. I'm just wiped out.

Sooooo, I decided to round up all of the projects I'm lusting and gushing over getting my grubby little fingers to work on, on here. I figured this would be an easier way to keep track than to keep wandering through folders of files of madness of messiness of always being distracted and then never getting to work on that shit. HA. Okay, onto links and images and madness.

CLOTHING~
And I just splurged with my profits from Anime Expo and purchased a snazzy new Brother CP7500 sewing machine that has lots of spiffy and fancy things. I am fucking pumped. I'm all about fishtail skirts, open knit sweaters, and sheers. And I need at least one galaxy item in my closet.

And I'm sure there are a shit ton more things that I can't remember right now. I'm also sure everyone has noticed that I must be on cut out and keep a shit ton. I also love to wander over to design sponge. Lovely tutorials and massive amounts of inspiration.

plans are a changin'

So I'm still fretting and freaking out about masquerade costume making and AX. But who is surprised about that. I've been having a bit of a personal meltdown regarding creativity's lack of presence in my current life and it's just become too overwhelming and I broke down. Today, however, I've taken a nice, strong deep breath and gotten my focus a teeny bit in check and I feel like I have a little bit of control. At least I'm feeling like less of a spiraling out of control cluster fuck wreck.

Let's start with where I'm at on my costume. I've sewn a pair of pocket hoops but I have not attached their ties or sewn the "boning" in yet. Then I had fabric dilemma drama and a meltdown because I can't decide what to do with the fabric I bought and freaked out and haven't been working on anything. The hoops went well though, just two nights for a couple hours. I had thought I was going to make a tutorial, but I got too locked on to the project and didn't want to break between every step to take photos and what not. Besides, I had a pattern that I altered and no directions, so I was just making shit up as I went anyhow. I might make up a written tutorial after my lame drama cools off. I also have a box of jewelry supplies collected for this project to make fancy things out of and any other random supplies I thought may suit this disaster.

Also, I've decided to go unicorn. I went as a unicorn 2 years ago, but it was nothing that I really wanted it to be, so let's give it another shot. Plus, my man is going as a lion in a Napoleon get up situation of awesomeness, and what goes better with a lion than a unicorn? So, unicorn I am.

Onto today's loveliness.

Firstly, I'd like to link the MythMasque pintrest board thingy of inspiration that they posted a link to today on facebook. Thank fucking god that they did this. It made my brain start firing again and barely begin to drag myself out of my sobbing cave of patheticness and aimless flailing. It is chalk full of wonderfulness. I highly encourage just going to the link and looking at all of the wonders. These are my personal picks. All of them can be found on their pintrest board with more information. I'll go onto the whole blather deal after the inspiration engorgement. If you want to skip the whole blather, feel free but if you're looking for books with pattern help, check out the links below.

So because of this spark, I decided to get off my lazy ass and pin on some temporary ties to my pocket hoop that I sewed the other day and actually try it on. I had been avoiding putting it on out of fear of it just looking like shit. Buuuuuut it didn't. It definitely has a few wonky spots but they are adjustments that I knew and know require fiddling with to get everything adjusted right to me. So that gave me a huge sigh of relief.

Then I tried on a corset I have floating about just to see what's going on kind of. So I stuffed myself into the corset and then folded one of my fabrics, a silver grey striped satin, up under the edge of the corset to see how awesomely huge my new ass looked with my hip pockets. Surprisingly, this went well and got me all kinds of excited that this actually was the shape that I was dreaming and desperately crossing my fingers for. I played with a few fabric options I have and decided for sure on the silver satin my outer skirt.

I also was able to decide that I will be making the bodice and outer skirt separate. I had started thinking that I was going to follow a pattern that I'm using for the skirt to make a gown with an attached skirt and bodice, but after today's experiments, fuck that. I am making two separate pieces and I am soooo glad that today's events helped me come to conclusions that were scaring and eluding me before.

So, I will be making a corset type of bodice with an altered bustline and perhaps a shortened waistline, an outer skirt, and then contrasting petticoat layers that are tattered and what have you. I have not decided on whether the outer skirt and bodice will be the same or contrasting fabrics.

Now onto where I'm pulling patterns from. My mom found two books at our library and thought they may help inspire me. Wellll, she checked out two FUCKING AMAZING books. Holy crap. And as I've searched about online for patterns and tuts, these books have come up a few times, so I'm super excited to have them in my hands for free.

Both books are filled with patterns that are to scale that you can enlarge and both include methods of enlargement. Neither one has step by step instructions for making the garments though.

Costume Close-Up Clothing Construction:1750-1790 by Linda Baumgarten

This book has scaling by inches or centimeters along the border of the pattern page making it super easy for any kind of enlargement. The patterns are all based off of surviving garments and has photos of each garment. It also discusses the types of textiles, techniques, what stitches were used, etc., as well as some construction directions, about each piece. It is an amazing book. You would be able to make perfect period accurate pieces using this book.

This is the book that I am using to pattern my skirt, petticoat, and pockets from.

Patterns Theatrical Costumes by Katherine Strand Holkeboer

This book is stuffed full of costumes from Ancient Egypt to 1915. I'm not sure why it stops at 1915 though. I feel it's a weird cutoff but whatever. Every costume is accompanied with a pattern. Many of the costumes have their coordinating undergarments as well. These patterns however, feel like basic slopers and are just a starting point where the other book's patterns are much more refined feeling. There is no instruction on construction at all in this book but there is naming of odd/funky pieces of clothing that I had never heard before. The patterns are all 1/8" = 1" scale. These are not period accurate costumes so I wouldn't recommend them for a serious reenactor or period buff.

I used this book for my pocket hoops that I slightly modified.

For both books, I used my "Tracer" projector to enlarge them appropriately on the wall. This worked perfectly and issue free. I also just picked up a roll of brown postage paper from the dollar store to transfer onto, which I fucking love compared to that tissue paper crap that comes in store bought patterns. I always feel like I'm just going to obliterate that crap by breathing on it the wrong way.

Also in regards to both books, I'm sure many people will stray from them because they lack instruction on construction but don't. I have not sewn that much and it's early enough in my sewing career to definitely still say that each project I take on is totally different and I'm in a brand new boat every single time. So I would rate myself as an advanced novice. I have only done 4 projects off of patterns. Otherwise, I just wing it. And winging it and wandering the internet for info has been an amazing teacher. So even though I just fly by the seat of my pants, these patterns make sense without instructions. Instructions would be more than awesome to have of course, but not having them hasn't really deterred me from tackling them. But I would not dive into these patterns if you've never sewn any clothing. And the patterns do come with marks for pleats and such.

So long story short, go check out these books if you're in need of costume help.

Now I'm going to go try to do a mock of up this purse bag thing I want to make for AX.
Toodles. <3

:.masquerade inspiration dump.:

Hello lovelies.

I started a wander on Etsy due to procrastination, of course, and verified my wandering by searching for supplies for Anime Expo crap that I plan to make to sell. So I meandered to my favorites and then became distracted by old corset and costume favorites I had collected quite some time ago now and now I am feeling even more inspired for the upcoming ball that I am dramatically far too behind on.

In fact, I have not made one thing yet. I actually haven't even pattern tested yet. I'm very likely fucked. But last Friday I showed three new pieces of art at a one night gallery show thingy. This was my first time showing pieces and I was pretty excited. I also poured all of my creative attention into those three pieces over the last two weeks. So I'm definitely behind on my masquerade ball creating and Anime Expo crap producing. Like holy shit.

I'm also starting to waiver a tad on whether I want to stick with the Marie Antoinette skirt or if I just want to bump it down to a full skirt with a hoop type setup thing still going on under it. I feel confused on how anyone is suppose to wear such a full skirt with a stay over it. Obviously it needs to be a stay or corset that does not cut low over your hips.

I don't know. I'm feeling overwhelmed with how little time I have left and how much I need to do and it's making me not work even more. I get overwhelmed into a standby mode of not functioning. And I have so much shit to do. Fffffff. Okay. I'm done complaining like a loser.

.......Plus I got completely sucked into the show "Skins" and all I want to do is watch more. It's eaten my soul.

Onto the inspiration fun!!~
And this time I have links to each piece with proper credit.

holy crap!~

Holy fucking crap.

So I just had some stupid mini meltdown again about getting job and how it freaks me out emotionally because of my broken face and all that dandy shit. I wrote a massive entry the other night about it but decided not to post. Hurrrrr. Soooo I moped at my lovely canada boy then decided I NEED to do a pattern mock up of my skirt plans for the masquerade ball.

I have sooooooo much stuff I need to pull out of my ass by June. Ugh.

And then I decided to google "starry night fabric" because I have this lovely fabric dreamed up in my noggin that I would like to make my skirt out of but I'm sure that if I ever actually found this fabric it would cost out the ass and an arm and I would cry on the floor of the store. Fffffff. Plus I'm going to need a massive amount of yardage.

The fabric I'm dreaming of is a sheer but almost opaque black and blue with some fleckles of white to emulate a starry night sky kind of feel.

So I googled. And then I saw this thumbnail of this fabric.

 Here are more lovely fabrics.

Well, it's not exactly what I want. I definitely want it to be much darker than this. But this is in the right direction of feel. And as suspected, it costs out the ass.

Fat Eighth $15.00
Fat Quarter $30.00
Fat Half $60.00

Uuuuugggggh.

However, just as I stared at the page of these beautiful hand painted fabrics I thought, why can't I do that? And then I thought about all of those badass galaxy shirts, leggings, shoes, bags, every fucking thing and how I've been trying to find the functional project for me that I can do that on and this is it. Galaxy shirt how-to.

I can buy thin, kind of sheerish cotton for sooooo much less, for something that is actually affordable since I probably need some massive amount of yardage. And then it will make the skirt even more custom and one of a kind.

I am so fucking stoked.

Granted I totally still have a shit ton of work to do before I can get to the actuality of making my own galaxy Rococo skirt, I'm stoked nonetheless.

And I have some more lovely inspiration photos that keep making my mind swirl around what do I want to do exactly.

This whole first group is all Alexander McQueen goodies. For the most part, I'm inspired by something from one garment of each pairing of photos.

...I'm determined to make a dress that is similar to the one on the left to frolic in this summer. A bit less boob smoosh though. I'd like to breathe.

All about that neckline on the left. Uuuugggh.

From ebay sale. It's simply a gorgeous gown and I would love to own it.

Best wishes to all the lovelies. I'm off to attempt a pattern mock up situation thing. Hurrrr. <3
